 OK, first assumption is that you Sorry I missed your call I was on a side quest shirt don't have a car. having a car in SF is generally a bad idea unless you have a parking spot of your own. if you do have a car, you might want to leave it behind, unless you're going the suburban route. if you weren't worried about money, living in SoMa proper or somewhere nearby like Potrero Hill/Dogpatch or the Mission would be a slam dunk--  it has more of everything you want. There are a few slightly iffy parts -- 6th street and the Potrero projects, but otherwise, safety shouldn't be an issue. But it's pricey. Roommates are good for intern life, and you'll need some :-)

Second choice would probably be Berkeley. Sorry I missed your call I was on a side quest shirt Has a tech scene of its own, fairly easy to get around without a car, and if you're near BART (be near BART!), you can get downtown quickly at any time of day. Great food and cafe scene as well-- good to be around a university, which also makes it easier to get summer housing. other east bay areas like Rockridge and Albany have BART and work well too. Oakland could be good as well, but explaining where to go there is more complicated. Third choice would probably be to go further out in San Francisco-- Tenderloin (sketchy but close, commute not a problem), Richmond, NoPa, Sunset,  etc.  Prices are lower, but the commute sucks a little -- worse than both San Bruno or Berkeley. but at least you can still get around without a car, and the food is still great, and quite a bit cheaper.
